Monterey or Seaside? How to choose where to stay

Walk-to-the-waterfront convenience or easy value just up the coast. A simple guide to choosing your base on the Monterey Peninsula.

Most visitors start by searching for a hotel in Monterey, but neighboring Seaside is just up the coast and often a smart choice. Here is how to decide.

Stay near Cannery Row if you want to walk everywhere

If your trip centers on the Aquarium, Cannery Row, and Fisherman's Wharf, staying right in the waterfront area means you can park once and walk. Cannery Row Inn is steps from Cannery Row and walkable to the Aquarium and the wharf.

Stay central for Carmel, Pebble Beach, and Big Sur

If you plan to drive 17-Mile Drive or head south to Carmel and Big Sur, a hotel close to Highway 1 saves time each morning. Stargazer Hotel on Munras Avenue is close to downtown and Highway 1, and Scottish Fairway Inn, El Castell Hotel, and Pacific Inn on North Fremont Street have easy highway access too.

Choose Seaside for value and a quieter base

Seaside sits on the bay next to Monterey, a short drive from the Aquarium, Cannery Row, and the wharf. Hotels here often offer more space and value, and Monterey State Beach and the Coastal Recreation Trail are close by.

Sand Dollar Inn has an outdoor pool and guest laundry, Sand Castle Inn has newly remodeled rooms next to a shopping center, and Bay Breeze Inn offers connecting rooms for families and groups.

Heading to an event?

For the Monterey County Fair and Event Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival, the North Fremont Street hotels are nearby. For Laguna Seca, a hotel on the east side of Monterey or in Seaside puts you closer to Highway 68.
