There is no bad time to visit the Monterey Peninsula, but each season feels different. Here is what to expect, so you can pick the trip that suits you.

Summer: busy, bright inland, and often foggy on the coast

Summer is peak season, when school holidays bring families and the Aquarium, Cannery Row, and the wharf are at their busiest. It surprises many visitors that summer mornings on the coast are often gray and cool, as marine fog rolls in off the bay. It usually burns off by midday, but not always.

If you visit in summer, book rooms and Aquarium tickets early, pack a warm layer, and plan an inland afternoon (Carmel Valley or the Highway 68 corridor) for sunshine.

Fall: many locals' favorite

September and October often bring some of the clearest, warmest days of the year on the coast, after the summer fog pattern eases. Crowds thin once school is back in session, though big weekends still fill up.

Fall is also event season. The Monterey Jazz Festival is held at the fairgrounds in September. In Pacific Grove, monarch butterflies begin to arrive at their winter grove.

Winter: quiet, dramatic, and good for whales

Winter brings cooler weather, occasional storms, and big surf, which is spectacular to watch from Asilomar or Point Lobos. It is the quietest time of year, and a good season for a relaxed getaway.

Gray whales pass along the coast on their migration in winter, and monarchs cluster in Pacific Grove's sanctuary, with numbers varying from year to year.

Spring: green hills and wildflowers

Spring turns the hills green and brings wildflowers to Big Sur and Point Lobos. Gray whales head north again, often with calves, and humpback sightings pick up as the season goes on.

Spring break weeks can be busy, but weekdays are often calm.

Quick planning tips

  • Always pack layers. A warm jacket is useful in every month.
  • Book early for holiday weekends, Monterey Car Week in August, and major events.
  • Check Highway 1 conditions before any Big Sur drive, especially in winter and spring.
