Pacific Grove and Lovers Point

A quiet Victorian seaside town with a picnic-perfect point, a scenic coastal walk, and an overwintering monarch butterfly sanctuary.

Pacific Grove sits just past Cannery Row, with Victorian homes, a small downtown, and one of the most beautiful stretches of shoreline on the Peninsula. Lovers Point Park has a small beach and lawns above the rocks, and the shoreline path continues along Ocean View Boulevard toward Point Pinos.

From roughly late fall into winter, monarch butterflies cluster in the trees of the Monarch Grove Sanctuary. Numbers vary a lot from year to year.

Good to know

  • Walk or bike Ocean View Boulevard for tide pools and wildlife along the shore.
  • Visit the monarch sanctuary on a sunny, mild day, when the butterflies are most active.
  • Point Pinos Lighthouse and Asilomar State Beach are a short drive farther along the coast.
