Cannery Row was once the center of Monterey's sardine industry, and John Steinbeck gave it its name in literature with his 1945 novel. The canneries closed decades ago, and the old buildings now hold restaurants, tasting rooms, shops, and hotels, with the Monterey Bay Aquarium anchoring one end.

It is an easy place to spend an evening: walk the street, step down to the small beaches between buildings, and look for sea otters and harbor seals in the kelp just offshore.

Good to know

  • The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail runs parallel to the street, which makes it a pleasant walk or bike ride to Fisherman's Wharf.
  • Parking fills up on busy days. If you are staying nearby, walk.
  • Sunset over the bay is a good time to visit.
