Some of the best moments on the Monterey Peninsula are free. Here are our favorite ways to enjoy the coast without spending a dollar on admission.
Walk or bike the Coastal Recreation Trail
The paved, car-free trail along the bay connects Pacific Grove, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, and Seaside. Walk any stretch of it and keep an eye on the kelp beds for sea otters.
Watch sea otters and sea lions
Sea otters are often seen floating in the kelp off Cannery Row and Pacific Grove, and sea lions gather near Fisherman's Wharf and the Coast Guard pier. Bring binoculars and give wildlife plenty of space.
Explore tide pools at Asilomar and Pacific Grove
At low tide, the rocky shore along Ocean View Boulevard and Asilomar State Beach reveals anemones, crabs, and sea stars. Check a tide chart, watch the waves, and look without touching or removing anything.
Follow the Path of History in Old Monterey
Monterey was the capital of Spanish and Mexican California, and a self-guided walking route through downtown connects historic adobes, gardens, and the Custom House.
Let the kids loose at Dennis the Menace Park
This much-loved city playground beside Lake El Estero is free, and the lake loop next to it is an easy family walk.
Catch a sunset
West-facing Asilomar, Lovers Point, and Carmel Beach are all beautiful at the end of the day. Pack a layer, since it cools quickly once the sun drops.
