Few races can match the setting of the Big Sur International Marathon: cliffs, ocean, and the climb to Bixby Creek Bridge on Highway 1. The 40th running takes place on Sunday, April 25, 2027.
General registration has already sold out across every distance (the marathon, marathon relay, 21-Miler, 11-Miler, 12K, and 5K), according to the Big Sur Marathon Foundation. If you have a bib, or you are traveling to cheer someone on, here is what to know.
Key times
- Buses to the start: runners are bused to the start from several Monterey Peninsula locations, with loading beginning at 3:30 a.m. The drive to Big Sur takes about an hour on a narrow, winding road.
- Marathon start: 6:45 a.m. at Big Sur Station.
- Course: point to point from Big Sur to Carmel on Highway 1.
- Course closes: the marathon has a six-hour limit, and Highway 1 reopens at about 1 p.m.
Always confirm details on the official marathon page and the race’s traffic information page in the final weeks.
Tips for runners and spectators
- Do not plan to drive Highway 1 on race morning. The organizers ask everyone to avoid it until after 1 p.m. If you are cheering, read the race’s spectator guidelines and plan to meet your runner at the finish festival in Carmel.
- Stay somewhere easy. With a pre-dawn bus, the last thing you want is a long drive. A Monterey base keeps you close to the bus pickup points and the finish.
- Plan a recovery day. Stroll Carmel-by-the-Sea or take an easy walk at Point Lobos on Monday.
- Pack for coastal spring weather. Fog and wind are common on the course, even when it is sunny inland.
Where to stay
- Stargazer Hotel on Munras Avenue is close to Highway 1, which makes it one of our most convenient hotels for Carmel and the race.
- Scottish Fairway Inn and Pacific Inn on North Fremont Street have quick Highway 1 access for an early start.
Race weekend fills up fast. Book directly with the hotel, and see more spring dates on our events calendar.
